When it comes to fashion there are a lot of unspoken rules, so you are forgiven for being confused on a few of the more subtle touches when it comes to dressing your best. And one of these finer points comes right down to the tips of your toes: Should you match your socks to the shoes you are wearing, or your pants?
While there are some obvious no-nos when it comes to matching your socks with the rest of your clothing (such as not pairing black with brown, at all!) some of the more subtle rulings can be more difficult to think of. So, here are some tips for making sure your socks are matching your outfit.
Create Some Contrast
Breaking it down into its most simple element: Socks do not have to match your shoes or your pants, rather they should work with both to help create contrast within your outfit. Socks that are perfectly matched with your shoes can make the two elements bleed into each other reducing the dramatic impact of each choice. So, pick socks that will create contrast and break up the blocks of your clothing.
You Should Match Some Elements
While you do not have to match your socks to your shoes or your pants, you should pick out a good accent color from somewhere else in your outfit, and match elements of your socks to that. That could mean picking a stripped pair of socks that matches an accent color in your shirt.
Avoid The White Socks
Unless you are in the gym or playing a sport, there are far too many options to bank on simple white socks as your day-to-day choice. A lot of people know that white socks with dress shoes is a huge red flag, but a little color, pattern or design is a good call in almost every situation.
